If you are considering building a new custom home or renovating your existing home, the first thing we tend to do is ask our friends or family first. In small regional areas, everyone knows someone. Word does travel fast whether it’s good or bad, so it pays to ask your friends or family for their first-hand experience if they have used a builder.

“Who’s a good builder in town?”
“Who built your home?”
“Who did all your renovation work?”

Once you decide who’s the most appropriate builder for you, I would highly advise you to speak to them over the phone and also meet face to face. At the end of the day, you need to feel comfortable working alongside the builder.

Here are 5 important questions to consider asking when meeting with your builder:

– Are you fully licensed and insured?
– What do you offer that other builders don’t?
– What’s included with the build/contract?
– What is included as ‘standard features’ within your builds?
– How often do you update your clients? Find out how they are going to communicate with you before, during and after construction.
